The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) has launched a new, online appointment system, allowing users to schedule appointments for fingerprint-based criminal history checks at any of the agency’s six locations. The new system was designed based on feedback from its users and can be access from any device.
Developed in partnership with NIC Nebraska, that state’s digital services provider and now a part of Tyler Technologies, the solution lets users view available appointments by location, data range, or the first available by location. Once users secure their selected appointment by submitting a few select data pieces, a confirmation email is sent providing directions to the location. They are then able to self-manage appointments through a portal which provides access to cancelling and rescheduling existing appointments and paying online through NIC’s secure payment processing services. Users have the option to pay for their appointments at the time of booking or to pay in-person upon arrival via ACH or credit card.
Originally launched by the Lincoln-area troop in September of 2019, the system helps the NSP manage the more than 1,200 fingerprint background check appointments per month. Its pilot program also reduced the average wait time by 50%, allowing the NSP to increase the number of appointments statewide.
“Our team has worked hard on this new system, with the goal of making the fingerprinting process easier for our customers in all parts of the state,” said Jeff Avey, Director of the Criminal Identification Division at the Nebraska State Patrol. “The positive results of the pilot program are already being duplicated with statewide implementation.”
In addition to a more convenient and efficient process for users, the new solution reduces the number phone calls for appointments, giving office staff more time to complete other tasks, while an administrative appointment application allows the NSP to search for, manage, and block off appointment times. The online appointment system also centralized the NSP’s online ACH and credit card payments for fingerprint background checks and allowed the agency to streamline their accounting and reconciliation for all online payments into one system.
