  • Inspiring Girl Scouts Through STEM

nic-spark-event-2016Did you know that according to a report from the Girl Scout Research Institute, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) jobs in the United States have grown at three times the pace of non-STEM jobs in the past 10 years? Add to that, girls who are exposed to STEM careers at a young age are far more likely to choose a career in the STEM field in the future.

As a technology company so passionate about what we do and that so firmly believes in giving back to the communities we serve, we were excited to partner with the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri to host a “SPARK” Event – sparking interest in STEM careers. Girls were introduced to a variety of technology careers and the roles required to develop a web application from start to finish. Beginning with introducing product owners and continuing on to explain the roles of business analysts, developers, project managers, quality analysts and more, the girls learned that there can be hundreds of different careers in technology, all of which can be fun!

Not only did the girls get to learn what a career in technology really looks like, they went on to build their own mobile Web apps. They developed a “Cookie Contacts” app to store all their contacts for cookie sales and track their order statuses. The girls left the event equipped to access the apps and maintain their contacts and orders through the end of the cookie season.

This was the second year NIC hosted the Girl Scouts for a STEM event, and we were thrilled to have exposed more than 43 girls to various careers in technology while allowing them to work hands on with code!
